The Craven Police force have issued a warning to Land Rover owners following a spate of vehicle thefts in the area.
Police have warned that it is not only the iconic Defender being targeted, even newer Discovery models with the most up-to-date security systems installed are at risk, one such model was stolen from Sharpaw Avenue, Skipton, last week.
The older ‘Defender’ models, which are no longer manufactured, have become particular targets for thieves. The vintage vehicle is particularly easy to strip down for parts.
Inspector Geoff Crocker of Skipton Police said: “There are between one and two thefts of Defender Land Rovers in Craven on average every week, so it is is vital that owners take extra security precautions, such as putting on steering wheel locks.
“The newer Discovery has modern security systems but thieves can get at these too, as was shown this week.
“We would advise all owners to make sure make it as difficult as possible for thieves to take their vehicle.”
Do not rely on technology as a sole defence for your Land Rover, add layers of protection such as pedal locks, steering wheel locks and other deterrents. Whilst no device on it’s own is a ‘be all and end all‘ solution, adding more protection will certainly help to deter thieves.
